Hockey Blog Vol. 18 Back To Normal
It’s the Hockey Blog once again we will skate around the world of the NHL.So get ready.

Lanz Editorial!
I’m ticked off at the lack of aggressiveness the Boston Bruins showed Sunday. These soccer moms in Bruins Uniforms lack INTENSITY. As matter of fact I’ll take the soccer mom comment back because they bring more intensity to their kids games then these guys do to professional hockey. If The Bruins need somebody to go out and even it up my I suggest, Kevin Youklis, Rodney Harrison, or Kendrick Perkinsor Cam Neely

I will give Shawn Thornton some credit for explaining why there was no revenge on WEEI Dennis and Callahan Show Shawn Thornton Interview
Thornton took some hard hitting questions and said things may have been different if he was on the ice.

There are unwritten rules in sports you take out our best player we will get even(Spare please with the finds and suspensions for retaliation in the last minutes of game) Sometimes you need to show sack regardless of the consequence. Especially, when your best player is elbowed in the head. Do you think Bob Gibsonwould let somebody throw at Lou Brock? Do you thinkMarty McSorelywould allow anybody to touch Gretzky. Do you think anybody would touch Bobby Orrwithout retaliation. Matt Cookeis a cheap shot artist and mere thug, The guy is a disgrace to the NHL. It’s appalling that the Bruins didn’t retaliate despite the consequence. It’s appalling that this kid didn’t get a penalty. It’s appalling that Colin Campbell said he reviewed it for an hour and half with seven other guys and said it was clean. It is simply appalling that the game has been wuzzified worst than hitting an NFL quarterback.

Has the NHL not purchase HD TV s for the little room in Canada. Did Campbell not put his glasses on for this hit. It was a freakin elbow to the head. Why, Are the Gm’s meeting this week in Florida? Are they watching exhibition baseball? No to discuss a blows to the head and concussions. Marc Savardhas one as a result of a cheap shot and nobody is doing a thing about it.. There will be a hearing today with Cooke. Damien Cox of The Toronto Star has a good take on the the proposed new rules. He also quotes Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero saying in "our rule book Cooke did nothing wrong" I guess old Ray uses a different Rulebook. It was a head shot Ray!

Claude Julian needs to take a page from Reg Dunlop. He needs to send his guys after Matt Cooke. Not Syd The Kid. Then again Clyde Shouldn't have to tell his guys what to do when the Bruins play Pittsburgh on March 18th.

NHL Goes to Court
From TSN,CA
The NHL is sueing former Coyote owner Jerry Moyes in his family by sitting that Moyes and his family breached their NHL contract and agreements by putting the team in bankruptcy and the trying to sellit.

Emotions for A Class Act.

From the Pat Hickey of The Montreal Gazzette, Saku Koivupraises his time in Montreal as the Candiens took on the ducks last night in Anaheim. An emotional Night for Koivu who spent 13 years with the Canadiens overcame cancer in 2001-2002 and an eye injury in 2006. He was aUFA and signed a 1 year contract with the Ducks as part of Bob Gainey'shousecleaning. The Canadiens didn’t resign him. Koivu was hoping last nights game was in Montreal but it was in Anaheim.

What's on My Mind!
What’s on my mind
The NFL is on my mind. Have you seen the proposed playoff OT format. It’s stupid. First the proposal only goes in effect for the playoffs! Why Not the regular season? OH sorry my blood boils every time I think how stupid this idea is.
Simply stated team A wins the toss. They score a field goal then time B gets a chance sounds good so far . Nice in Fair. But IF team A scores a Touchdown the game ends.

It’s the NFL they will be trading field goals for a month.(Of Course they way the kickers kicked in the playoffs there maybe a lot of misses). Here’s what I think if you going to have sudden death . Your defense needs to make a stop. Secondly , instead of complicating the rule get rid of “ Sudden Death” and Play an overtime period. One 15 minute period than a series of 5 minute periods if it is still tied. Yes I know an offense can hold the ball for 5 minutes . It forces the defense to make a stop,

Whats on my mind.
The Boston Media. I watch several of the news stations late last night and early this morning. John Lackey goes out pitches two nice innings, in his spring training debut as a Red Sox. They painted it like he just won game 7 of the World Series. On clown even put up a graphic saying “Me Likey Lackey” COME_ON!. The guy is a good pitcher but this exhibition baseball and a non story.
Incidentally heard an interview with lackey this week on the radio , He sounds alot like Hank Hill.John Lackey Interview.
Hank Hill Sound Boards

Whats on my mind
The combine and the draft. Honestly, wake me up when it’s over.Tell me who went #1 overall. Tell me if the Patriots helped themselves. Then tell me how many of these guys will get limited time over the next 2 years and how many first and second rounders will be out in 5 years . I’d rather watch paint dry. Especially in the late rounds when the Raiders are picking some scrub 7th round from the defunct Hofstra football program. I can’t wait to hear how that scrub was great against the defunct Northeastern. Tell me when it’s over.

Whats on my mind.
A lot talk on the radio about Paul Pierce and trashing talking. Callers in Boston saying they don’t like Pierce. KG is the king of trashtalking but it’s ok for him so was Larry Bird and it was ok for him. Pierce was cast in a leadership role long before he was ready. He has great years on a bad team. This guy is now one the best players in the league. I just don’t get it. He has done everything the Celtics have asked him to do and more. I think the guy is an awesome player.

So That’s what’s on my mind ! What’s on yours.?

Hockey Bolg Vol 17. Post Olympics, Post Deadline
It’s that time of the week again. It’s time for the Hockey Blog.
This week I have a lot of opinions so that will be the bulk of it.

The Olympics
I’m not buying into the NHL will increase viewership due to the Olympics. I think a short term spike will increase viewership. But as soon as somebody watches the Atlanta Thrashers and Florida Panthers play, they will say that’s not what I watched. I thought (I have said this before). I thought it was nice to see 5 all star teams in the tournament and the USA and Canada rivalry which I think was made bigger than it actually was. I explained it to somebody that watched hockey for the first time and was all wrapped up in the rivalry. I said by Tuesday guys on these teams will be playing together again. I also think that rivalry would be much bigger if it wasn’t NHLers. The Hockey may not be as good but it would capture the true spirit of the Olympics.

NBC needed to show more Hockey in primetime on the network. The NHL should have insisted on that when they signed their contract with NBC. I’m not buying the IOC wouldn’t allow it. The IOC like the NHL is selling a product and I thought they dropped the ball on Hockey. They say the get more a cross of viewers with figure skating. I admit those folks are athletes and do amazing stuff on skates, But it all likes the same to me. It’s sort of like watching Nascar your just waiting for a crash.

Was it a good tournament as far as pure hockey goes it was outstanding and fun.
Congrats to the Canadian Olympic Team they wanted it more and I won’t talk anything away from them it was like playoff hockey just solid.

Trade Deadline
The Phoenix Coyotesshowed they were serious about competing. I thought they did an outstanding job of filling needs and making themselves better for the playoffs.

I thought it was a huge slugfest between Pittsburgh and Washington. Neither team let the other get one up on them. I

I thoughtBostonwho needed somebody to put the puck in the net they flunked. The Bruins had a bargaining chip that they wouldn’t use a First Round draft Choice from the Phil Kesseldeal. They refused to trade it. They had a shot atRaffi Torresor Wojtek Wolskibut it would have cost them that draft choice. Both players ended up elsewhere, Buffalo and Phoenix respectfully Are either one of these guys the solution probably not but it would have been a move toward a solution. But deals weren’t made. Denis Seidenbergis a nice player but he doesn’t help with the scoring. Maybe they rebuild but they were the best team in the NHL last year. This year they are a bubble team.

Toronto cleaned house. Dropped salary and are in rebuild mode.
Those are my final words.

Brett Favre returned to the NHL.
Are the Atlanta Thrashers out of there minds. They could have built a team around Ilya Kovalchukthey ship him out,. Who do the bring in the NHL’s answer to Brett Favre Chris Chelioswho will turn 60 next month (just kidding) Like FavreChelios doesn’t know when to hang them up. Unlike Favre, Chelios can’t play anymore. Can we just send the Thrashers up to Quebec because they aren’t really in an NHL city some transplantsfrom the Northeast may attend a game more to see the Bruins, Rangers,, Flyersor Canadiens. They are a disgrace.

The Red Sox in the NHL
The Tampa Bay Lightninghave had a Boston Connection for many years. Phil Espositowas part of the original ownership group. John Tortorellacoached them for a few years he is a Boston Guy. Now Boston’s Jeffery Vinikwill be buying them he is a minority owner of the Boston Red Sox. According to NHL.com

Power rankings return

Questions
There is alot of talk this morning on the radio. After a fine Olympic Tournament if your not a big fan of the NHL. After watching the olympics will you be more likely to become a hockey fan and watch the NHL? Will the NHL keep your interest after watching a regular season game? Will you tune in for the playoffs were it is alot more intense and more like the Olympic Tournament?[/i]I know there are alot of NHL fans here me included , this for those casual observers and the folks that the Olympics turned them on to a game we already know is great.

Hockey Blog Vol.16. Olympic Edition #2
It’s time for the Hockey Blog once again. I thought there would be more trade talk this week but the papers I have scanned and the sites I have checked seem content with Olympic coverage.

Here is a quick one my kids will play an NHL video game fairly often so last night I come home from coaching my littlest guys basketball team. I walk in and my son and wife are playing some winter Olympic video game and they are playing Curling. I was like are you out of your mind. I have had enough of curling especially when it’s in HD and Hockey is not (Sunday US vs, Canada on MSNBC which I don’t get in HD). Then again who would want to look at that tool Keith Oberman in HD(I don’t work for NBC so I can’t get suspended for saying it)

Dropping The Ball
Let’s get it going. NBC dropped the ball Sunday on that US vs. Canada game it was about as exciting of a Hockey Game as you could get. If you could find it. It showcased the best of the NHL for the most part. This raises the question is the NHL done with the Olympics for the future.? Tom Cowlishaw of The Dallas Morning News.explores the issue and says the commish has to take the lead.

Meanwhile the Commish is saying not so fast according toMark Miller of Yahoo Sports.com the commish is in now hurry to opt of the Olympics.
Personally I’m Cowlishaw on this NBC carries the NHL but didn’t showcase it in the Olympics with loads of NHL players in top form are you kidding.

Speaking about Dallas.
It looks like Marty Turcois of the block. The Stars waived Goalie Alex Auldand they added
G. Kari Lehtonena few weeks ago. That makes Turco the number 1 guy in Dalallas.
Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning Newsexplains why Turco
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/hockey/stars/stories/022510dnspostarsitem.14e50d8fa.html

GM’s just sitting around
According to Bruce Garrioch Of The Ottawa Sun. Most GM.s took last week off with no sense of urgency before the deadline there hasn’t been much out. Nor has there been a lot of teams selling. The Senators GM Bryan Murray is looking for one more piece to the puzzle. Maybe D.Aaron Wardwith the Senators lacking on defenseman. Due to injuries.

Olympic Hockey
ZI thought last night that the Russians would give the Cananda agame but they didn’t Canada looked good and the change from Luongo has helped. The Canadians will be taken on Slovakia and The USA will be taking on Finland. In the Semi’s Friday those games will probably be on QNBC. Hopefully this sets up a USA vs. Canada rematch on Sunday for the Gold. G. Ryan Millerhas been playing out of his mind, as has Rick Nash Canada

Meanwhile the most dominate women’s teams will play for Olympic Gold today. The Girls have been a bit catty about it lots of trash talk going back and forth. According to USA Today

Power Rankings No Change from Last week They will continue in two weeks.

Olde Tyme Hockey Picture of The week
